When we touch base with friends, the question we hear more than any other is, “How are the boys doing??” “The boys” are our cats, Karma ( Grey Tiger Tabby ) and Mojo ( Black ). They are 7 1/2 year-old mixed breed rescue cats, and they round out our little family.
We got the boys when they were only 5 weeks old and started acclimating them immediately to both riding in vehicles and walking on leashes, hoping that they’d take to travel and camping. They’ve done both beautifully and have settled into life in the motorhome without missing a beat. We had expected the move to be a little bit difficult for them, but it turns out that all of the chaos and packing at the house on Big Pine was a huge adventure: they’ve never had so many boxes to climb in and out of, nooks & crannies to explore as furniture got moved around, and empty closet shelves to explore. While they’ve taken trips with us in the RV before, this is now officially the longest stretch they’ve spent in the RV and we’ve changed locations more than they had experienced on other trips. Not suprisiingly, the smart little devils have already gotten into the routine of life on the road and are having a blast! They’ve learned the sounds of “setting up camp” and now they ambush us as soon as we’ve finished hooking up the electric and water and ask to be taken for a walk immediately so they can explore the new location. If we don’t they just stay underfoot and drive us crazy until we do. We try to walk them every day unless the weather is horrible and they’re really enjoying it. In addition, we’ve set up their cushy beds on the dashboard so that they can lie up there even when all the blinds are down and they can enjoy the view and the squirrels!!
Look for a future post about the practicalities and challenges of full-timing with cats.
